Why Touch-Free Device Removal Matters

Getting A Bit Handsy

Humans can’t use our hands and feet to perform various tasks like monkeys, so we have to use our hands for everything.

This means our hands are one of the first points of contact for germs. Most people practice good hand hygiene during specific activities like using the bathroom, during and after meal prep, etc. However it is imperative that people wash their hands throughout the day no matter where they are or what they are doing.

In the hospital, staff should aim to wash their hands constantly and properly. This could mean using the 6-step hand washing technique (illustrated above) or using antimicrobial hand sanitizer.

Hand hygiene is the centerpiece of any good infection control practice. The implementation of proper processes and monitoring can drastically reduce the spread of infection.

Mobile Devices are an Extension of Our Hands

A natural extension of these infection control practices is device hygiene. Here, it is important to know the distinction between sanitizing and cleaning a device.
Sanitization describes actively killing or inactivating microbes, whereas cleaning simply refers to physically removing things like dirt, grease, and dust from the surface of your device.

When we sanitize our devices we’re ensuring that the surfaces we regularly interact with are also free from contamination and that our hand hygiene policies are not undermined by a petri dish in our pockets.

Put Your Hands in the Air (And Don't Touch the Lid)

People are becoming increasingly aware of the bacteria on their mobile devices, and they want to be able to do something about it when washing or sanitizing their hands. This is especially true in hospitals, food processing plants, and other sensitive environments.

Throughout our product development process we spoke to many users who emphasized the need to successfully sanitize your device and your hands without re-contaminating them.

With that in mind, CleanSlate implemented touch-free device removal. This feature allows users to touch the lid just once to start the process, and then easily retrieve their device after 20-seconds when the lid pops open automatically.

Touch-free removal matters because it ensures that you’ve broken the chain of infection. It limits the opportunity to get your hands dirty again before removing your sanitized mobile device. Clean hands should touch bacteria free devices!
