The Challenge

With thousands of people everyday boarding their planes or landing from their flights, airports are guaranteed to be one of the busiest places to be in. Toronto Pearson Airport is Canada’s largest airport. In 2018, they had a total of about 49.5 million passengers and handled over 473,000 flights. Being such a high traffic facility, the spread of infections within areas of the airport is inevitable. It is found that over 11, 000 viruses and 5,000 bacteria are present on transit system surfaces worldwide. Large airports, such as Toronto Pearson, faces the challenge of protecting their staff and passengers from the potential spread of infections.

Managed by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), Toronto Pearson Airport values the creation of an innovative facility that operates responsibly and efficiently, all while meeting the regional and global demands for travel, it is crucial for them to find effective hygiene solutions to protect their staff through and to ease passenger worries about safety.

The Deployment

In September 2020, Toronto Pearson Airport partnered with CleanSlate UV to deploy 30 units throughout different areas of the airport. They deployed the units in 3 different phases, deploying 10 units each during September 2020, November 2020, and February 2021. 47% of the CleanSlate units are passenger-facing, while the remaining 53% are staff-facing.

They deployed a unit in every terminal and in different staff areas, including break rooms, front lobbies, and offices. 90% of the CleanSlate units had an accompanying signage with them to better attract the attention of those passing by and to provide more information about how to operate it. To ensure complete sanitization, 33% of the CleanSlate units also have a hand sanitizer nearby for people to use.

"The Greater Toronto Airports Authority is committed to a science-based approach that prioritizes the health and wellbeing of passengers and airport workers... CleanSlate's UV technology is another valuable layer of protection in our Healthy Airport transformation, maintaining our commitment to stringent hygiene and sanitation protocols."
Deborah Flint, President and CEO, GTAA

The Impact

Since its deployment at Toronto Pearson Airport, there has been over 120,000 CleanSlate cycles, with approximately 210,000 devices sanitized. From this, 2.4 billion pathogens per in² of devices sanitized were inactivated, breaking the chain of infection. By using the CleanSlate for device sanitization rather than chemical wipes, they have prevented over 884 lbs of wipes from going into landfills each year.

"Cleanslate's UV mobile device sanitizer is important in ensuring a safe travel journey as we play our part in combating the global pandemic. We're proud to have received the ACI award for "Best hygiene measures by region" in North America. Cleanslate helped us achieve this award. We are truly grateful to be working with such innovative partners as we recover through 2021."
Aaron Zhou, Associate Director of Strategic Planning & Business Analytics, GTAA

With units across the entire airport, it can be quite difficult to keep track of maintenance needs for all the CleanSlate UV units in such a big facility. Toronto Pearson Airport uses the CleanCloud Software Suite for quick and time-effective maintenance responses. With CleanCloud, their operations and maintenance team can proactively address staff concerns on the unit with real-time alerts.

The CleanSlate UV team also conducted a survey at Toronto Pearson Airport to get the staff and passengers’ thoughts on the CleanSlate deployments. Based on the results, 100% of the staff stated that they understand CleanSlate enough to be able to explain it to guests. 43% of them said that they use the CleanSlate every day, while 71% rated the ease of use and convenience of the CleanSlate as a 5 on a scale of 1-5. In terms of the passengers, 73% of them stated that they are more comfortable travelling from the airport with having the option to use a UV sanitizer in the premise. On a scale of 1-10, around 60% of the passengers rated the ease of use and convenience of the CleanSlate a 9-10

Since the pandemic, there has been an increase in safety and hygiene procedures, especially in high-risk and traffic areas like airports. CleanSlate UV serves to provide the new normal for staff & passenger hygiene during transit. Its simplicity allows for deployment anywhere in the airport – from passenger terminals to staff only areas. It is designed to be effective in high traffic environments, with a capacity to sanitize 450+ mobile devices in an hour. Toronto Pearson Airport’s deployments of the CleanSlate ensures a cleaner and safer environment for all their staff and passengers.
