The Challenge

Sutter Health is a national leader in healthcare quality, providing care to over 3 million Californians while outperforming many measures of quality in state and national averages. With an integrated network, they have been able to deliver coordinated healthcare and ensure that they are providing accessible and inclusive services to the community.

Sutter Medical Center (SMC) in Sacramento is their main site. Since its opening in 1923, it has built several facilities including Ose Adams Medical Pavilion, Anderson Luchetti Women & Children’s Center and the Sutter Center for Psychiatry. Their organization aspires to integrate best practices to provide enhanced care for their patients – looking for ways to reduce medical complications, unnecessary procedures, and hospital visits.

In 2020, they acquired a total of over 690,000 emergency room visits and over 1,490,000 outpatient visits. With the large number of patients they encounter daily, SMC continues to find efficient and affordable solutions in maintaining proper hygiene and device sanitization. It is estimated that the cost of sanitizing a device using a chemical wipe is about $1.10 and will take approximately 90 seconds to complete. Through this, it is crucial to find solutions that are not just effective, but also cost and time efficient.

The Deployment

In July 2019, SMC deployed 10 CleanSlate UV sanitizers in their facility. The goal was to improve staff, visitor, and patient safety by inactivating pathogens on devices in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requirements on device hygiene.

To ensure efficient device sanitization, SMC deployed 4 units in ‘fixed’ locations and 6 units in ‘rotating’ locations, with the units moved between departments on a regular basis. Some locations include critical care units, the emergency department, and the operating room front desk.

Seeing such promising changes and impact from the CleanSlate UV sanitizers in their facilities, they have decided to add 5 more units to their fleet in December 2021.

Since the deployment, there has been a total of 114,000+ CleanSlate cycles, sanitizing over 200,000 devices. More than 2.3 billion pathogens per in² of devices sanitized were inactivated and over 462 lbs of wipes were prevented from going into landfills each year. Based on usage patterns, SMC achieved a return on investment (ROI) of 1.5x across a 3-year period in consumable and labour savings alone. These findings have shown the value of CleanSlate UV sanitizers.

Sutter Medical Center has a full facility deployment while keeping costs to a minimum. They achieved this through rotating 6 out of the 10 units that they purchased within different locations in the hospital. With the ease of transport of CleanSlate stands, the Sutter Health Team was able to make a conscious effort to rotate the units on a weekly basis. This ensured the maximum number of departments in the hospital has access to proper device sanitization.

Overall, Sutter Medical Center continues to improve their infection prevention protocols, in an effort to ensure staff and patient safety.
